Why is scarification important?
If dead moss and grass stalks are left undisturbed on your lawn, they will turn into thatch (a build-up of dead organic matter that lies on the soil surface). Thatch prevents the flow of moisture to the grass roots and can thus end up weakening and even killing the grass in your garden. During wetter periods – i.e. autumn and winter – it can also create damp, humid conditions that encourage moss growth and promote grass diseases and fungus.
lawn scarification will remove thatch from your lawn and allow the grass underneath to grow normally again. If your lawn feels thick and spongy, scarifying your garden may be necessary to remove the layer of thatch.
Lawn scarification should be strategically scheduled either early spring or autumn to ensure that it is followed by favourable weather conditions that assist with the lawn’s recovery. Moss control should be carried out 2-3 weeks in advance, as lawn scarification could end up spreading moss spores across the lawn and making things worse than before.
It’s a good idea to scarify your lawn every 2-3 years at minimum (depending on soil and weather conditions), but the specialists from Lawn & Weed Expert will advise you on the best course of action for your particular garden.

Soil – in particularly heavy, clay-based soil – tends to become compacted over time. The soil particles get pushed closer together by heavy rainfall and/or footfall on the surface making it difficult for moisture and essential gases to flow freely and reach the roots of your grass. This can lead to under- developed roots, moss, weak grass, and poor disease / drought tolerance.
You can purchase those spiked slippers as we call them to walk all over your lawn hoping the spikes will aerate the lawn but honestly, they are ineffective and a waste of your money.
Aerating your lawn by a professional from Lawn Bright will make your lawn look great. We recommend aerating once every two to three years (as recommended by the RHS) depending on the use and type of soils in your area. Some lawn care services will recommend every year but to be honest once every two to three years is usually enough.
Lawn Bright use professional grass aeration machines that move across the surface of the lawn and punch metal spikes (tines) 2-3 inches into the ground. This creates hundreds of tiny holes in the ground and loosens compacted soil. If necessary, we will advise a hollow tine aeration to pull soil cores out of the ground – this helps to remove troublesome thatch as well as aerating the lawn.
If your lawn has become unsightly because of soil compaction, our expert lawn aeration service will help.
