There are two grubs that can devastate your lawn in a matter of weeks from a nice green lawn to dead lawn. The sign of an infestation is usually an unusually yellow grass that’s spreading like the picture below.
The grubs hatch in the spring when the weather is warming up and they eat the tender roots of young grass to grow. They love new lawns that are less than two years old because the roots are still tender. The early signs of an infestation are unusually yellow grass spreading, Lots of crane flies ( Look like daddy Long legs) in the garden and the grass getting patchy with bald spots.
The second stage is the middle picture which in a matter of weeks have killed the lawn completely.
The other sign of an infestation is thinning a thinning lawn that’s starting to get patchy like the picture below.
You can recognise the bugs by the picture below. They come to the surface of the lawn in the evenings when the birds cant spot them. You can usually spot them with a torch. They look like maggots but bigger and the leather jackets look leathery and wrinkly.
The DIY way to treat the lawn and get rid of these pests is to use nematodes which you can buy from most garden centres but its really hit and miss and costly. You can also use a black plastic bag and cover the lawn for a few days and hope the bugs rise to the surface because they love warm moist places and rake them out. This can take time and you will have to do this at least twice a week till they have gone.
The quickest way to treat this quickly is to contact me or call Lawn Bright on 01582 744844 and get a survey to treat the infestation and hopefully save the lawn from getting destroyed.
